Skill: Communicate 2.1.1 Identify Stakeholders Quest

In the virtual classroom, instructors must offer continuous updates to all stakeholders, such as parents, students, and school facilitators. Think about each of these stakeholder descriptions and discuss.

Stakeholders in a virtual classroom are very similar to an online classroom.  Roles and description may change but stakeholders have basic definitions and responsibilities.

Stakeholders:

Instructor:  Instructors need to continuously communicate with all other stakeholders. The instructor is often the link between students, parents, and administration. Communication should be positive, offer solutions, and show support for students.

Students: Students have the responsibility to keep the lines of communication open between themselves and the teacher/parents. They should be proactive in reaching out for help when needed

Parents: Parents are seen as the coach/facilitator for the students. They help guide their students through the online learning process. They should encourage their students to communicate with their teachers.

Administration: Administration should be available to all stakeholders for questions.

Do the descriptions correlate to your perception?

I think that the descriptions do match my perceptions and how they are involved in e-learning. In my teaching experience online, I have learned that communication upfront in the very beginning of the course that lays downs expectations, guidelines, policies, etc is key in students and parents having a positive experience throughout the semester.

How can they be expanded upon or described further?

I think that there needs to be a stress on the communication between teacher and student. This relationship is key. Often it is perceived that online learning is ‘cold and lonely.’ Communication between teacher and student early on can help the tone for the duration of the course.

Are there other stakeholders within an online environment not considered above?

I think that the overall school community is important and is a stakeholder. Individual actions affect the community as a whole.
