Skill: Navigate 1.2.1 Describe Roles and Functions in Online Learning Environments Quest

Describe roles and functions in online learning environments in your blog.

When I was doing research I was reminded of this quote from Dr. Seuss and a discussion I had about who plays a role in a student's education. In grad school we had a discussion about the many people who are a part of a student's education in a traditional school. The obvious teacher, student, parents, principal and the not so obvious nurse, cafeteria worker, volunteer, custodian, and many more provide the necessary network for student success.

Just like in a traditional face to face classroom, every person no matter how small his or her role plays an important part in the success of a student’s e-learning. And just like a traditional classroom there are obvious and not so obvious roles:

Students are the participants that decide to engage in online learning. Usually it is to get ahead in credits, make up credits, or free up some time in their school day to pursue other attributes.  Students are responsible for engaging with the content on daily basis, completing assignments, asking questions when needed, and competing tasks when the are due.

Teachers are responsible for facilitating the instruction, managing the virtual classroom, and interacting with students within the course. Teachers are responsible for checking for students progress through formative and summative assessment, providing effective feedback to the student, and helping keep parents aware of their student's progress.

Parents provide support for the students, either through payment for the course, supplies (computer, internet access, lab materials for a science class), emotional support, technical support, and encouragement. Parents should be aware of their student's progress and could act as a liaison between teacher and student if needed.

Facilitators are the link between the student and their home school or a student and GaVS. These individuals approve course, sometimes arranges for payments, and support students in their home school. Often facilitators can also be a bridge between the virtual teacher and the parents.

Developers are task with creating the content for teachers to facilitate and student to learn. Developers ensure that state standards are being met and that students are engaged in the content.
Administrators are in charge of the learning management system, policies that govern actions of teachers and students in the DLC, and the day to day tasks that keep everything running.
