Skill: Communicate 3.2.2 – Differentiation Quest

Create an example of differentiated communication practices to post for students or parents and share on your blog. Reflect thoughtfully on the concepts presented in the Differentiation section of the Communicate skill and utilize three resources.

Differentiated instruction is essential to learning both in a face-to-face classroom and online. Since online teachers do not see their students face to face, differentiated communication is essential as well. As a visual/auditory learner, just reading an email with instructions does not always sink in. Having a flow chart or images helps with my understanding of the email. Sometimes I just need to hear the words being expressed and explained as I read them.

Online teachers can differentiate communication in several ways. Here are three ways of delivering the same information:

Classroom Bulletin Board Announcement Good for getting information out to students. I know it reaches them.

2.     Voki with the Basic Information about Test Corrections - Good for getting information out to students, they might do better listening to an announcement. I have had kids say “Yeah I read that but don’t remember…”

3.     E-mail to parents and students about test corrections directing them back to the Bulletin Board. Good for getting information out to students and parents so that all stakeholders know the details.
