Skill: Navigate 3.1.4 – LMS Reporting Quest

Consider the LMS explored during the Navigate skill. Then, in your blog, discuss the following: What are the options for grade reporting? Are there various levels? Which levels remain most valuable for the online instructor in regard to student performance?

After having a discussion with a  friend who uses Schoology I decided to use this LMS to explore these different Navigate skills.

What are the options for grade reporting? Are there various levels?

For grading teachers can decide if the grade will be numeric or letter grades. Teachers have the options for assignments to be graded but not count toward the overall grade for formative purposes.

I think the analytics in the grading and the various levels are useful in keeping up with the needs of the students. Teachers can monitor a student’s progress sin real time. The different levels allow for various users to have different access:

Student
Will determine the number and length of time a student has spent on the site. This is important for a teacher to determine the needs of a student
Teacher
When teachers are teaching the same course, this can give a big picture of how students are doing within the combined courses as well as track progress between the courses.
Course
This can gather information on what is working for the class and what is not. Is 2nd period better at quizzes and 3rd period better at discussions?
Program
This is for administrators. Admin can use levels 1-3 to gather information on what courses to offer, and can help guide hiring and course offerings for the next year.

This tool is essential to get a macro and microscope view of how an individual student is progressing and learning within a course but can also be used to see how teh students as a whole are progressing. The ability to do this allows every participant in the LMS from student, teacher, administrators the change to make informed decisions about how best to serve individual and holistic needs of students.
