Take a moment and return to the resources provided in this
section of the Communicate skill and the ongoing exploration of communication
practices in the online environment. Then, in your blog, discuss the following:
•
How do communication practices in the online environment
correlate to effective feedback?
One of my favorite quotes is by Rallo May
who said, “Communication
leads to community, that is, to understanding, intimacy and mutual valuing.”
Communication is key in this world. In an online world, communication via news
announcements, newsletters, emails, instructions, etc are what connects a
teacher and a student. It provides more than just the shell of a classroom with
content. There is a direct correlation
between communication and feedback with student achievement. Communication and
positive feedback helps a student feel as though they are part of a caring
community. If a teacher is in
communication with students they can determine if what feedback and type direct
or indirect is needed.
•
Why is authentic feedback important for online learners?
Authentic feedback is essential for
any learner whether they are in a face-to-face classroom or an online classroom
as it helps improve student performance.
In an online learning environment this feedback through the use of communication
is important for three reasons 1) it helps the student understand what they are
doing right and what they need to improve on 2) It helps form a relationship
between the teacher and student and 3) it can motivate students to do better. In science it is imperative that students
use their data for conclusions and analysis. Feedback and provided examples can
teach them this skill that they need for success on future assignments.

In what ways might an instructor enrich a student’s online
experience through feedback?
A student taking a class on line can have their course
content enriched through feedback. Teachers can provide links to outside
resources including but not limited to you tube videos, songs, websites, and
online demos. In some LMS, teachers can leave feedback via a voice recording.
This helps strengthen the bond/relationship between teacher and student.
